Welcome to First Step Yoga!

We offer beginner-focused yoga in Scarborough, Ontario.

Beginner-Focused Yoga in a Friendly Community

First Step Yoga was created with community in mind.  Here, you are invited to "come as you are" and connect to others in an accessible and down-to-earth place.


Our small group classes are designed to support beginners and those seeking a slower, more mindful approach to practice.  We offer a low-pressure environment where you can practice at your own pace.

Planning Your First Visit

 We run regular group classes every week.   


Our schedule lists current class times.  On this page you can read more about the class types we offer.  


All classes are beginner-friendly, with no previous experience in yoga required.
 

PLEASE NOTE:  Pre-registration is required to reserve your spot.   You can book classes through our online booking system or email us at firststepyogato@gmail.com.

What to Bring

For the class, please wear any clothing that you feel comfortable moving in.  


What to Bring:   


  • A yoga mat (if you have one).  If not, we have mats here that you are welcome to use.  


  • A water bottle is recommended.  


  • During the colder months, you may wish to wear layers or bring a small blanket with you.



Please note: We do not have change rooms at the studio.  We do have a large, private and gender-neutral bathroom that you can use to change your clothes, if needed, before or after class.
 

Getting Here:

The studio is located at 3110 Kingston Road, Scarborough Ontario.  The closest intersection is McCowan and Eglinton.

 

Parking: There is a parking lot at the studio plaza, although it occasionally does get full.  Parking is also available on nearby side streets.


Arrivals: We'll have doors open 15 minutes prior to the start of class.  Please arrive a little bit (5-10 minutes) early so you can get settled before we begin.  For the safety of all participants, doors are locked 5 minutes after the class starts.


NOTE:   For evening classes, the lights are kept low for a calm and relaxed atmosphere.  It may look like the studio is closed from the outside.  We are open, so please just come on in!  

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of our most commonly asked questions.  Please also feel free to reach us at firststepyogato@gmail.com to have your questions answered.

You don't need to be flexible or experienced to start.  Our classes are slower-paced and beginner-friendly. We focus on accessible and mindful movement, favouring grounded strength over athleticism or fancy shapes.  All you need is  a willingness to show up and listen to your body.


Yes, pre-registration is required to reserve your spot and ensure your space in the class.  You can book classes through our online booking system or by emailing us at firststepyogato@gmail.com.


While we don't specialize in prenatal yoga, you are welcome to join us.  Our classes can still be suitable for pregnancy with the right modifications.  Please consult with your primary care provider before starting or continuing any exercise program during pregnancy.


Depending on how you're feeling and your doctor's advice, gentler styles (such as our Mixed Yin or Gentle Yoga classes) are often the best fit.  Please reach out to us at firststepyogato@gmail.com so we can help you find a practice to suit your needs.


If you can't make it to a class, please cancel at least 12 hours in advance.  You can manage your bookings through our online booking system or by email to: firststepyogato@gmail.com.  


Cancellations made < 12 hours before the start of class will result in a forfeiture of the class credit.  For Unlimited Memberships, a $10.00 cancellation fee will apply.  In the event of sickness or emergency, please contact us. 


Classes usually have between 6-12 participants.  


You will be greeted by the instructor and asked to sign a participation waiver.  It is an open room and you'll find the mats placed already on the floor.


There is often a bit of friendly chat before class starts.  Or you may find folks taking some quiet time before or after a busy day.  You're welcome to keep to yourself or join the conversation.  There is no pressure either way.
